VimpelCom to test 5G on self-driving BelAZ trucks in coal mine

MOSCOW, May 18 (PRIME) -- Russian mobile operator VimpelCom, working as Beeline, has unrolled a pilot 5G zone in an active coal mine of Siberian Coal Energy Company (SUEK), whose possibilities will be used for the first time to test self-driving dump trucks by Belarus’s BelAZ, a VimpelCom spokesperson told PRIME on Monday.

“The main task of the experimental zone is testing 5G networks for self-driving and remotely-controlled transport, reveal and register technological advantages of the latest generation network in comparison to industrial network WiFi/MESH,” the spokesperson said.

The test is done on the territory of coal mine Chernogorsky in the republic of Khakasia, in Siberia, on Huawei equipment with a 5G network stretch of 1.5 kilometers.

High-resolution cameras are attached to the dump trucks with all data transmitted to a center of information processing.
